Board of Directors...
John Affeldt
is a managing attorney at Public Advocates, Inc., a public interest, non-profit legal organization in San Francisco. Graduating cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1990and Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University in 1984, Mr. Affeldt clerked in the federal district court in Miami where he assisted with the trial of Manuel Noriega. Since joining Public Advocates in 1991, his focus is on a variety of statewide discrimination and equity issues on behalf low-income and minority communities, particularly on education and health care issues. Lead counsel in Yvette Doe v. Wilson which prevented former Gov. Pete Wilson from ending prenatal care for undocumented women, Mr. Affeldt is currently one of the lead counsels in Williams v. State of California which challenges that the state fails to provide adequate educational opportunities to low-income and minority children. Prior to law school, he spent three years living and working in Jakarta and Nias, Indonesia where he taught English and worked as a field coordinator with Volunteers in Asia. Serving as an APA board member since 1998, Mr. Affeldt is currently Board President.

Jane Chessen, a mother of four and a former UCSF/SFGH administrator with the Emergency Pediatrics Department, is well aware of the prevalence of domestic violence in our society, "I support APA because they identify at-risk families and then work with the parents to prevent harmful situations. This intervention model stops child abuse." The Chessen family makes an annual donation to APA, "We see what APA Family Support Services is doing for children, and we want to help APA Family Support Services keep on doing it."

Lily Raagas Corrales graduated from San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco and University of the Philippines. She worked as a senior eligibility worker with San Francisco Department of Human Services for more than twelve years in Aid to Families with Dependant Children. Since 1985 she has been a child welfare worker with San Francisco Department of Human Services Child Welfare Division. "I will continue to support APA and will continue to refer clients for services."

Rose Chung, board member and vice-president, graduated from SFSU with a degree in Health Education. Employed at SFGH as an x-ray technologist, she is the President of the Chinese Employee Association there. Rose enjoys community fund-raising events and serveson APA's board as well as on the Board of Chinatown Neighborhood Center. She is elected to the Republican Central Committee. For the last fifteen years, she produces the Miss Asian Pageant and stays busy year round with community service. She says, "Rewards of community service are felt within the heart." Rose appreciates the difficulty of raising a special needs child, especially for mono-lingual and low income parents who are sometimes unable to access resources available to their child.

Jean Fong, board vice-president and fund-raising dinner chairperson, has been working with APA since 1994. She is an enthusiastic and indefatigable supporter of APA, working on special events, recruiting volunteers, etc. Jean says, "Some of my fondest memories are of the early years when Mai and I would attend the annual Asian Business League's volunteer night to promote APA." Having worked at Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute for 15 years, she currently works as the program administrator for the Psychiatry and the Law program. Serving on numerous department and campus-wide communities, Jean is a devoted, well-regarded member of the UCSF community. Her greatest pride is her three grown children. As a single mother, she empathizes with the young women APA serves, "Because my greatest role in life has been being a mother, I want to help these women achieve the same happiness and success in raising their children as I did."

George Fung is assistant vice-president at the Bank of the West in Chinatown. Dedicated to his job, George is also a devoted family man. APA holds a special place in his heart. With first hand experience as a teenage immigrant from Hong Kong, George understands the difficulties one faces upon arriving in the U.S., having to raise a family and not knowing how to speak English. George and his wife, Rita, are the proud parents of four boys, ages 14 (twins), 11 and 5 months. George loves children and juggles his schedule to spend time with his sons to take karate classes and play tennis. George holds a B.S. in economics and finance.

Mai-Mai Ho is an immigrant from Hong Kong who speaks Cantonese, Mandarin and Toishanse. Ms. Ho received her Master of Social Work degree from University of California, Berkeley and is a licensed clinical social worker. She is chair of the Asians Committee, which is part of the
San Francisco Department of Human Services Family Preservation and Support program, and is an advisory committee member of the Early Childhood Interagency Council of Starting Points at the Department of Children, Youth and Families. She previously served on the Mayor's Task Force on Welfare Reform, the Greater Bay Area Family Resource Network and the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium. Ms. Ho graduated from Coro Foundation, City Focus Program in 1993. She won the Civic Unity Award from the Koshland Program/San Francisco Foundation in 1996. Under her leadership, APA received the Community Leadership Award in 1999 from the San Francisco Foundation.

David Martz, an associate with the international law firm of Morrison & LLP. He practices banking, financial services and intellectual property law. Mr. Martz is co-director of his firm's partnership with the Bessie Carmichael School. Active in his church, he tutors and mentors children and youthin the Tenderloin neighborhood. Mr. Martz is a graduate of Yale University,
with a B.A. in languages and literature and a graduate of Yale Law School.

Dr. Don Wong, born in the Canton Province of China, immigrated to Evanville, Indiana at five years old. He went to Phillips Exeter Academy in 1967, received a B.S. from Columbia University in 1971 and earned his M.D. from Tufts University in 1975. Dr. Wong served as San Francisco General Hospital's Chief of Nursery from 1979 to 1995. He has two teenagers, Heather and Aaron, and a passion for fly fishing. He also enjoys basketball, bicycling and stained glass.
