Leadership Award; APA Honored at City Hall... On the steps of the recently renovated City Hall rotunda, San Francisco Foundation's CEO, Sandra Hernandez, M.D. and its Chair of the Board of Trustees, F. Warren Hellman, explained what the Foundation hopes to nurture through its grants and awards. Mayor Willie Brown praised each award recipient for their outstanding contributions to the quality of life in the Bay Area. The chair of the Foundation's Awards Committee, Charles Collins narrated a slide show about each of the four recipients of the 1999 Community Leadership Award. Executive Director Mai-Mai Ho, accepted the award on behalf of APA. The three other award recipients were: Bona Cheema, Dorothy Smith Patterson, and La Pena Cultural Center. More than 80 million nominations were received by the Foundation for the award. A
Celebration in the Community... The evening was highlighted by remarks by distinguished guests Supervisor Mabel Teng, Supervisor Leland Yee Ph.D. and Rolland C. Lowe M.D. of the San Francisco Foundation. Supervisor Teng spoke of APA's good work and the tenacity of its executive director, Mai-Mai Ho, and gave her pledge to help with fund-raising. Other notable community leaders were: Hung Yue Louie, president of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Thomas Ng, with the San Francisco Fire Commission Leei Meeh Lui from the mayor's office. A
Letter From the APA Board President... In January, the board also selected a new slate of officers. I was honored to be elected Board president and to be joined by two outstanding vice-presidents, Rose Chung and Jean Fong. David Martz will serve as APA's new secretary, and George Fung, as APA's treasurer. This is a terrific team with over three decades of combined commitment and dedication to APA. Of course APA would not be seen as a "community leader" had it not been for the superb leadership of long-time outgoing President, Hoy Wong. Fortunately,
we have not lost Hoy's experience and thoughtfulness; he will continue
to provide his good counsel as a committed boring member. As APA expands
its services and continues to play a leadership role in ensuring the Asian/Pacific
Islander newcomer community receives support services across San Francisco,
we hope you will maintain, indeed, increase your support of this important
work.
